My premaster project at KdG Sint-Lucas in Antwerp was inspired by a story from the Bible. I was intrigued to explore the Tower of Babel as a narrative and interpret it visually. The results consisted of a series of small paintings, made with oil-based ink and acrylics, sculptures made of concrete, and an intervention to a column of the school building. Additionally, the final presentation demanded unorthodox use of wall and floor space, along with props (such as construction foil) and upturned gallery furniture (table and plinths). The works were made in 2020 and 2021.
Intervention to the column was physically separate from where the other works were shown and it began with a mural painted directly to it in oil-based ink. At a later stage, the column was covered with wall painters’ masking tape and a bucket and mop were trapped along the way. A space had to be cut out to allow access to the fire extinguisher, for safety reasons.
